Past Events
I presented my essay-in-progress about Filipino food in America, A VERY PERSONAL CUISINE, at the Craft, Culture and Critique conference at the University of Iowa on Sunday, April 17, 2011. I made adobo samples, which everyone ate.
I read at the Sunday Salon in NYC in November 2010.
The Park Slope Pork Off!! Holy chorizo, this was a porcine success. On March 3, 2009, we held a completely sold-out food competition at the venerable Loki Lounge that netted hundreds of dollars for Kamay at Puso. The New York Times and Not Eating Out in NY ate with us. And look, here are me and my pal Molly counting the votes to determine the winner.
I co-curated an evening of Asian American comedy with The Asian American Writers' Workshop on March 12, 2009. It was hosted by improviser Helen Kim, who also played an assailant in Kill Bill 2. Helen Hong educated us on racially-themed footwear. Ali Wong demonstrated her grooming habits. Jen Kwok exhorted us to date Asian men with her boombox and a ukelele. Kevin Nadal read a letter from his mom. Sheela Shrinivas asked for moustache donations. And the improvisers of Barkada (Kirk Damato, Terry Jinn, Erik Tanouye, Risa Sang-urai, and Becky Yamamoto) showed us how stuffed animals could be put to use in a couple's relationship. The workshop was packed and stayed packed for two and a half hours.
